If the 21st century's accelerating tornados, wildfires and floods cannot teach late industrialised humanity to respect nature, what might?
Written at the crossroads of early modernity and the industrial revolution, Burke's treatise focused on nature's capacity to induce awe, terror and transcend aesthetic beauty in this phenomenon named 'the sublime'.
It's arguable that industrialised populations have largely transposed the fear and wonder Burke felt for storms, landscapes and physical extremes onto the fruit of our own invention: rockets, cars, fairground rides, concerts, great ships or aircraft and consumer drops.
Even so, there are many among us who've experienced the terrifying ecstacy of sailing in a force 9 gale or surfing on a concrete-like wall of water, hurtling towards the sand.
Most of us will have felt the shocking pleasure of plunging into a cold fresh river or the overwhelming affection and protectiveness it's natural to feel towards other species as well as the very young and old among our own.
It's these emotions the New Sublime asks us to express through our defence of the natural world as an entity with its own right to exist, and through the creative arts in order to pass that message on.
